Which Philips HeartStart AED Model to Buy
Philips remains one of the most popular life-saving AEDs (Automated External Defibrillators) in the World with over two million devices sold. All the HeartStart AEDs have a red and white carrying cases but the AEDs within are quite different. So here are the 3 primary workplace & community AED models in order of launch date:
- Philips HeartStart FR2 AEDs. This model can be distinguished by the large text display screen. These AEDs have been discontinued and Philips has deemed them “end of life” and these should be replaced & upgraded right away. The biggest shortcoming of the FR2 was separate electrode pads that needed to be opened and plugged in to save a life. Now all AEDs have pre-connected pads for to help make them easier to use. If you have this model, contact AED One-Stop Shop at Sales@AEDOneStopShop.com for an upgrade quote, and do ask about any rebate promotions.
- Philips HeartStart OnSite or HS1 AEDs. This model can be distinguished by the front facing SMART cartridge and the “PULL” handle above it. This is a current and supported AED type and its been a favorite for organizations seeking an affordable and simple to use AED. The AED is fast to use and Philips’ Life Guidance helps coach the rescuer through CPR compressions. Its shortcomings are a low IP rating which means it’s not particularly tolerant to dust and water and it’s generally not a rugged AED.
- Philips HeartStart FRx AED. This is the newest of the public access type AEDs and it’s packed with great life-saving technology. It’s much more rugged and tough than the OnSite model with great tolerance to dust and water. It also has an optional but highly recommended pediatric key that’s a wonderful investment. Most AEDs (including the FR2 and OnSite models) require pediatric electrodes that would need to be replaced every 2 year. The child key feature on the FRx allows for pediatric mode without every having to swap out adult pads for pediatric. The combination of these great features and it’s straightforward and easy use make it a great choice.
AED One-Stop Shop is an authorized National Philips dealer and highly recommend the Philips HeartStart FRx AED over all HeartStart AEDs. We recommend the FRx workplaces and especially our K-12 public, private and charter school customers.
